Here are some of the pics I took on my trip to the Western Ghats. We passed through Horanadu and Agumbe in Shimoga, and Sringeri and Balehonnur in Chikmagalur districts of Karnataka. We saw plenty of paddy fields, and arecanut plantations with a few streams and waterfalls thrown in. Tiny village homes, and multicolored temples dotted the trip along with an assortment of animals. Monkeys and cows were much more common than cats and dogs.
Hope you enjoy the slideshow.
(It’s rather long, I know, but I did my best to choose as few images as I could. It was quite a task, considering I had with me well over 500 pics.

Beautiful photography!
Thanks!!
Hi there PencilGirl! Glad you’re back safely from your trip, and what beautiful and stunning photos you have put up for us to look at. It just all looks amazing! I have just ‘liked’ your facebook page by the way. I am also on facebook with my blog – just search for Southhamsdarling.
Thanks Diane!
The sights were amazing..
I’ve found you on facebook as well..
I’m here to scribble my appreciation, Pencil-Girl! Thank you for taking me on that scenic tour. So many beautiful sights. So many monkeys and cows. That waterfall with rainbow was magnificent. Was that you posing in one of the shots? Thank you again, dear friend!
Glad you liked them, Shady!
And yes, that was me..
Cool Pics… I like the cows chilling the shed while it rains… Agumbe is a nice place to camp.
Thanks!
And I loved the cows out there.. For one, they were much cleaner than the ones I see around Bangalore.
Moreover, they just seem to fit in better into that background, you know?
Agumbe was beautiful.. But it was also one of the more ‘touristy’ places we visited.. :\ (other than jog falls, that is..)
I’m feeling even more envious after seeing all those wonderful pictures. All full of greenery…
The ones of the waterfall and the clouds on the mountains were lovely. How did you capture that rainbow in the waterfall ? And didn’t those monkeys bother you ?
Heehee..
Thanks!
As for the monkeys, we were actually quite scared of them. Did a lot of zooming with the camera to capture them.
In fact, there was a time in Agumbe, when they were swarming all over the bus, so we locked all the doors and windows and just stared at them.
The rainbow was pretty much permanent there, what with all the spray and mist. I guess I was just lucky it was a sunny day..
I love the ones of hte waterfalls best but the last photo has me stumped what is it…………..
a fountain?
The last one is a picture of a Shiva-linga that I found on the campus of the Central Coffee Research Institute at Balehonnur. A Linga is a representation of Lord Shiva and is worshipped by Hindus. I’ve never really questioned it’s appearance, but a quick Google search tells me that it is often interpreted as a phallic symbol, especially by Westerners (thanks Wikipedia!) But one of the stories I’ve heard from my grandmother suggests that the lingam is representative of a pillar that has no end, symbolic of the infinite nature of the God. Lord Shiva is popularly known for his affinity to snakes, so we see the lingam sitting on the coils of a snake, and with it’s hood covering it.
Thanks for showing me the parts of India I haven’t visited yet
